The company that made PUBG, Krafton, has sued Garena, saying that it copied PUBG: Battlegrounds. That’s not all, either. Apple and Google have been sued by Krafton for selling Garena’s games in their app shops. Google has also been accused of having YouTube videos that show how the two Garena games Krafton has a problem with are played, as well as “numerous posts that contain a feature-length Chinese film that is nothing more than a live-action dramatization of Battlegrounds.”
Garena Free Fire and Garena Free Fire Max are the two games that Krafton is fighting these companies over. Both games are free and can be downloaded from the App Store and the Play Store.

Krafton says that both Garena Free Fire and Garena Free Fire Max have copied many things from PUBG: Battlegrounds. This includes the unique “airdrop” feature that starts the game in Battlegrounds, which is a copyrighted feature, as well as the gameplay and structure, locations, combinations and choices of weapons, and overall color schemes, materials, and textures.
The company that makes PUBG says that Garena has made millions of dollars from in-app sales. “Both Apple and Google have made a lot of money from the way they’ve distributed Free Fire,” says the Wall Street Journal.
Krafton says that it asked Garena on December 21 to “immediately stop its exploitation of Free Fire and Free Fire Max,” but Garena said no. Apple and Google were also asked to stop selling the games, but you can still find both of them in the app shops.

Krafton has also asked YouTube to take down Free Fire and Free Fire Max gameplay videos “that include elements that clearly infringe Battlegrounds and, separately, the infringing feature-length film,” but YouTube hasn’t done that yet.
Krafton said that Garena sold a “copied” version of PUBG: Battlegrounds in Singapore in 2017. Even though the claims about this game were settled, the lawsuit says no licensing deal was made.
Apple and Google haven’t said anything about Krafton’s case yet, and Jason Golz, a spokesperson for Sea, which owns Garena, told The Verge that Krafton’s claims are “groundless.”
